GMHBA Stadium (Kardinia Park): The Definitive Seating Guide

Currently GMHBA Stadium, Kardinia Park is located in South Geelong and is the largest capacity regional Australian stadium. It has a seating capacity of 34,000 and is the home of the Geelong Football Club.

About Kardinia Park

Kardinia Park features six grandstands and the Gary Ablett Terrace. The stadium was recently redeveloped, with new light towers and a video screen installed. This has enabled it to play host to night games since mid-2013.

The stadium is mainly used for AFL games, with the Geelong Football Club playing on its famous turf since 1941. It has become something of a fortress, with the club having a particularly good record against visiting teams and between 2007 and 2011, the Cats did not lose a single home game.

It is also a second home to Melbourne Victory and they have played there infrequently since 2013.

In 2016, Kardinia Park hosted its first cricket match, with Sri Lanka beating Australia in a T20 game. So far in 2018, it has also hosted Women’s and Men’s Big Bash League games.

How to get to Kardinia Park

Geelong’s compact size means that getting around the city is fast and easy, however you decide to travel.

Coming from outside of Geelong, the VLine runs matchday services to and from Melbourne every hour. The VLine takes roughly an hour each way and uses the same Myki system as the Metro train system, which makes it the easiest way to get to Geelong. Once in Geelong, regular bus services run from Geelong Station to Kardinia Park, or stay on the VLine and alight at South Geelong Station if you feel like a short walk to the stadium. Check the PTV website for bus timetable information and more details on extra matchday services.

Public parking is available at Kardinia Park however, spots are limited and can be closed based on the weather conditions. On AFL match days, it is recommended to use public transport to avoid congestion. The stadium has a dedicated drop-off zone outside the stadium, however this is extremely busy on AFL match days and policed to ensure pedestrian safety.

There are also parking spaces available in the streets around the park, but these are often subject to council restrictions and may require a resident’s permit.

While the park doesn’t have a permanent taxi rank, taxis are available at a temporary match day rank on Moorabool Street. Taxis can also be booked by calling 131 008, but be aware that match and event days are particularly busy so you need to book well in advance.

Highlights of Kardinia Park
