Our Top Australian Tennis Players

Creating a list with top Australian Tennis Players was far from easy. There are so many players that truly deserve to be in this list, but we had to make it a little more compact for our readers. We selected players according to talent, future promise, legend status or achievements. Read on and discover who made it on our shortlist of top Australian tennis players!

Lleyton Hewitt

Lleyton Glynn Hewitt is definitely a tennis player that belongs in our top Australian Tennis Players list. He was born on the 24th of February 1981 in Adelaide.

During his career, he has won a large amount of junior National titles and obtained the Australian number 1 position in 1996. He was also the youngest player to ever qualify for the Australian Open in 1997. He was only 15 at the time.

Hewitt also obtained the number 1 tennis player in the world position in 2008, having great wins in San Jose, Indian Wells and Queens. He also defeated David Nalbandian during Wimbledon and successfully defended his Tennis Master’s title.

Even though Hewitt has been plagued by hip injuries over the past few years, nobody can deny his great talent for the tennis game.

Nick Kyrgios

One of the younger players that managed to obtain a spot in our top Australian Tennis Players list is Nick Kyrgios. This amazing athlete was born on the 27th of April 1995 in Canberra.

Despite obtaining most of his games during 2014 on a wildcard, Kyrgios made it to the quarter finals in Wimbledon, which is quite impressive given his young age.

Samantha Stosur

Samantha Stosur is our first female athlete in our top Australian Tennis Players list. Sam has been playing tennis from a fairly young age, after she displayed a great talent for the game. Whilst growing up, she attended the Australian Institute of Sport’s Tennis Program, providing her with a great head start.

The female tennis star got her first big break when she reached the fourth round during the Australian Open in 2006. She also discovered a love for doubles games, and won several titles with doubles partner Lisa Raymond, including the US Open in 2005. However, injuries started to affect her gameplay in 2007. After a good recovery period, Samantha started to focus on singles matches again in 2010.

Casey Dellacqua

Casey Dellacqua is an Australian tennis player with Italian and Irish roots. She is currently the number 44 female tennis player in the world and obtained her best results at the 2012 Texas Tennis Open and the 2014 Aegon Classic.

Even though Casey has played a great number of single games, she seems to do great in doubles. Casey has won three WTA doubles titles and the Grand Slam mixed doubles during the 2011 French Open.

Rod Laver

Rod Laver was born on the 9th of August 1938 and is still considered as one of the best tennis players in history. Laver was the number one tennis player for a whopping 6 years, going from 1964 to 1970.

Laver obtained a staggering 200 singles titles and still holds the all-time male singles record of obtaining 22 titles in one season. He also holds the record of being the number one for the longest period of time.

One of the most remarkable characteristics of Rod Laver was his ability to play on all types of court surfaces. He adjusted his game perfectly to any type of surface, whether it was grass, clay or hard court.

His great career also got him a spot in the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1981. Next to that, he also obtained his spot in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame four years later. Rod Laver was also named as an Australian Living Treasure. However, it does not look like this is the end of the titles bestowed on this tennis legend, MP Bill Byrne is currently supporting Rob Laver for a knighthood.
