The Melbourne Cricket Ground, or MCG, was built in 1853, and was the venue for the first ever Test in 1877. The MCG is also and an integral part of the Ashes legend which came about after Australia’s unanticipated win against England in 1882.

Following Australia’s historic win an English newspaper printed a satirical obituary which said English cricked had died and its ashes would be sent to Australia following cremation. In response the English cricket captain Ivo Bligh committed to regaining ‘the ashes’ on the English cricket team’s next tour to Australia in 1882/83. During the Australian tour, after England secured victory in two of the three Tests, a group of Melbourne women gave Bligh a miniature urn containing the ashes of a cricket bail.  The urn and ashes were jokingly referred to as the ashes of Australian cricket, cementing the term The Ashes, which is used to this day.

As the MCG has been hosting Ashes Tests since they began, there have been a very large number of historical Ashes moments at the venue including:

- Bob Cowper made 307 runs at the MCG in a gargantuan 12.5 hour innings at the 5th Ashes test of the 1965/66 series, which remains the only triple century scored in Australian during an Ashes Test. Australia won the Test, but the series was a 1-1 draw.

- The last day of the 4th Test of the 1982/83 Ashes series at the MCG was one of the most nail-biting Test finishes in history. Over 15,000 spectators attended free of charge to see Allan Border and Jeff Thomson continue their tenth wicket partnership. Despite Border and Thompson’s gallant efforts, England won the Test by a paltry three runs, and Australia went on to win the series 2-1.

- The first Ashes hat-trick by an Australian in over 90 years was achieved by Shane Warne at the Boxing Day Test at the MCG during the 1994/95 Ashes Series. Despite Warne’s efforts, England worn the Test by 106 runs, while Australia won the series 3-1.
