The Adelaide Oval, considered a batsman’s paradise, was first host to a Test match in 1884. Several noteworthy moments in Australian cricket and Ashes history have taken place at the Adelaide Oval, including:

- During the 3rd Test of the1894/95 Ashes Albert Trott debut 8/43 against England, the best ever single-innings Test figures at the ground. Australia won the Test by 382 runs however the Ashes series was ultimately taken by England who won 3-5.

- At the infamous 1932/33 ‘Bodyline’ Ashes series, the Test at Adelaide Oval Bill Woodfull and Bert Oldfield were struck by English bowlers using bodyline tactics. The resulting tensions at the ground led to patrols of mounted police to maintain order amongst the record crowd of 50,962.  The Test is widely considered one of the most unpleasant ever played, and the atmosphere has been described as a disgrace to cricket. England won the Test by 6 wickets and the series 4-1.

- Adelaide Oval hosted the 4th Test of the 1946/47 Ashes series, in which Arthur Morris of Australia, and Denis Compton of England both made centuries in the first and second innings of the Test. The match was drawn, and Australia retained the Ashes with the final score of 3-0 for the series.

- During the 2006/2007 Ashes series, the demand for Adelaide Ashes tickets was so high that several temporary stands were erected to cope. Additional stands were erected between the Chappell stands and on top of the hills. Australia were the victors by 6 wickets on the memorable last day. Australia won both the Test and the series in a 5-0 whitewash.
