The Gabba is a Brisbane icon and first staged an Ashes Test in the 1932/33 season. Since 1936, this premier venue has been host to the first test of every Australian Ashes series, with the one exception of the 100th anniversary test in 1982 which was held at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

As the Australian side hasn’t lost a Test at the Gabba since 1988, it has a very impressive record as Australian cricket’s season opening stronghold and has been host to many great moments in Australian cricket and Ashes history, including:

- During the famed 1932/33 ‘Bodyline’ Ashes series, controversies abound, the 4th Test was held at the Gabba. Despite being hospitalized with acute tonsillitis for the first three days of the series, Eddie Paynter batted for almost four hours and achieved what was then the highest ever Test score of 83. Despite Paynter’s efforts England won the Test by 6 wickets and the series 4-1.

- The 1974/75 Ashes Series has become known as the ‘If Lillee don’t get you, Thommo must’ national tour due to the bowling prowess of the pair following Thompson’s controversial comments in a pre-game interview. During the Test at the Gabba, the constant barrage from Thompson and Lillee saw Thompson concluding the first innings on day two with the wickets of England’s top three players. Thompson then followed up in the second innings with six scalps, contributing greatly to Australia’s victory in the Test by a margin of 166 runs.  Thompson himself ended on an impressive 9 for 105. Australia went on to win the series 4-1.

- During the first Test of the 2006/07 Ashes Series at the Gabba a legendary Australian line up dominated, leaving England all out for 79 in their second innings whilst Australia ended on 384 runs.  Mathew Hayden played an integral role in England’s humiliating defeat, reaching his century in just 126 balls, which was the sixth fastest achieved in Ashes history. Australia won the series in a 5-0 whitewash.
