Definitive Seating Guide for Marvel Stadium

Marvel Stadium is one of the Melbourne’s most recognisable landmarks, with its position adjacent Southern Cross Railway Station making it the gateway to Docklands.

Officially known as Docklands Stadium, it is currently the home ground for five AFL teams – Essendon, Carlton, Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne and St Kilda. It is currently sponsored by The Walt Disney Company who own Marvel Entertainment and from where the ground currently takes its name. Until recently, the venue was known as Etihad Stadium as part of the previous naming rights contract.

Marvel Stadium was built to replace the aging and outdated Waverley Park. It has been purpose-designed to offer a versatile arena for sport, cultural events and more, and it is recognised as one of the most advanced stadiums in the world. It is one of two international-class venues in Melbourne’s inner suburbs, with MCG just a few kilometres away in Richmond.

The stadium features a retractable roof, making it a versatile, all-weather venue for a wide variety of events. The roof’s flexibility also offers a unique viewpoint for photographers to capture the on-pitch action.

A guide to the history of  Marvel Stadium

Docklands Stadium was first opened in March 2000. Since then it has played host to some of the world’s biggest names in sports, music and entertainment.

Some of the concerts that have been held in the stadium over its history include:

- Adele
- Taylor Swift
- Ed Sheeran
- Eminem
- AC/DC
- Robbie Williams
- Pearl Jam
- Green Day
- One Direction
- Red Hot Chili Peppers
- Bruce Springsteen

The stadium has hosted matches for the Rugby World Cup in 2003, State of Origin Rugby League matches on several occasions, cricket internationals, and more. Plus, every weekend during the AFL season, there is footy to be found at Marvel Stadium.

AFLX is the latest sport to make its home at Marvel Stadium. This new shortened, faster version of AFL made its debut in 2018 and has been developed to offer a new variation on Australia’s favourite game.

Marvel Stadium Seating Plan

Marvel Stadium’s seating capacity depends on the event being held. The stadium can seat 53,359 people, which makes it the third largest venue in Australia. If it is hosting cricket, the capacity is reduced to 47,000 to meet the demands of the sport.

Marvel Stadium’s largest-ever crowd was 77,000 in March 2017 when pop star Adele performed. The largest seated attendance for a sporting event was when 56,771 fans packed in to witness the Wallabies beat the British Lions by 16-15 in 2013.

How to get to Marvel Stadium

There are a number of ways to get to Docklands Stadium, including by car with ample parking near the stadium. There are also taxi services and Uber available.

By Train

Marvel Stadium is located in central Melbourne, which makes it one of the easiest venues to reach in the city. The main travel hub at Southern Cross Station sees hundreds of thousands of people and hundreds of trains every day, with almost every metropolitan service passing through. This makes it easy to see all the events at Marvel Stadium by train, simply and conveniently. The stadium is directly connected to Southern Cross Station via a pedestrian bridge, and it is approximately a four-minute walk to reach the entrance.

Given the central located of Southern Cross Station, it is also possible to walk to Marvel Stadium from other CBD landmarks relatively quickly. Flagstaff Station and gardens, Flinders Street Station, Melbourne Central Station and South Melbourne shopping precinct are all with 30 minutes to an hour on foot.

By Tram

As with the train services, trams run to, from and past the stadium regularly. Melbourne’s grid system leads trams from LaTrobe Street, Bourke Street, Collins Street and Flinders Street within close proximity to Southern Cross Station and Marvel Stadium. There are tram stops on the CBD side of the stadium on Spencer Street as well as on Harbour Esplanade in Docklands itself. Check with Public Transport Victoria for timetables, route information and maps to Marvel Stadium.

By Car

It is generally recommended that people visiting Marvel Stadium use public transport to avoid traffic congestion. Metro Trains and Yarra Trams increase their services to accommodate more people during events to help everyone get to and from the stadium with ease.

If public transport isn’t a feasible option or you prefer to drive, there are several options. Parking is available at both Southern Cross Station and Marvel Stadium. It is advisable to book in advance or arrive well before your event is scheduled to start as spaces fill up quickly. Parking availability can also be limited by the event, so it is worthwhile planning well ahead.

Another option is travelling by taxi or ride-share service, which removes the cost and stress of parking but can mean long waits and high prices at peak times. Some of the city’s most common taxi services include 13CABS, Silver Top Taxis and Melbourne Cabs.
