The West Coast Eagles formed in 1986 when they became the first Western Australian club to join the VFL. They are based in Perth, and undertake training and home matches at the Subiaco Oval, also known as the Dome Stadium. Ross Glendinning, previously at North Melbourne, became the West Coast’s first captain, with the club’s first senior VFL match held in March 1987 at Subiaco Oval, where they beat Richmond by 14 points.

West Coast first played in the finals in 1988 and went onto play in their first Grand Final in 1991 but lost by 53 points to Hawthorn.

Notably, also in 1991, Peter Sumich became the club’s first player to reach a century of goals, with 111 during the season, as well as the very first left-footer to do so.

The following season, in 1992, the side won their first premiership after beating Geelong by 28 points, making history by becoming the first non-Victorian team to win an AFL Grand Final.

The club was beaten in the finals by Essendon in 1993 by 32 points but were back on top spot in 1994, wining the premiership match against Geelong by 80 points.

The West Coast Eagles finished the remainder of the 1990s strongly, playing in the finals in ever year to 1999, with their best result in 1996 coming fourth after being defeated by Essendon by 77 points.

The club also made the AFL finals rounds in 2002, 2003, and 2004, where they were defeated in the elimination finals, and made the Grand Final in 2005 where they were defeated by Sydney by 4 points. The next year, in 2006, the side against faced Sydney in the Grand Final who they beat by the slim margin of one point.

West Coast also made the AFL finals in 2007, 2012, 2015 & 2016, playing in the 2015 Grand Final where they were defeated by Hawthorn by 46 points.

The Eagles placed seventh in the 2016 AFL season, with leading goal kicker Josh Kennedy making 80 goals for the season and earning the Coleman Medal for the second consecutive year, after first being won by West Coast’s Scott Cummings in 1999.

West Coast’s very first Brownlow Medal was won by Chris Judd in 2004, with West Coast players also receiving this prestigious award in both 2005 and 2014.
